NBA Africa and Safaricom have partnered to create the M-PESA Jr. NBA program, the largest youth development initiative of its kind in East Africa. This exciting program will benefit over 10,000 boys and girls in Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Kisumu.
The program kicked off with a clinic for over 100 local coaches at SABIS International School in Nairobi. Throughout February and March, regional M-PESA Jr.
NBA tournaments will take place in these cities. Youth aged 13-16 will participate in skills development sessions and competitive games. In each city, 20 boys’ and 20 girls’ teams will compete, and the top 80 players will be selected for an elite camp at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa in April.
In addition to basketball training, Safaricom’s M-PESA will host financial literacy workshops for participants. This will help young athletes develop good money habits and financial skills for their future.
Clare Akamanzi, CEO of NBA Africa, highlighted the significance of the collaboration “This program marks a major milestone in our efforts to make basketball more accessible to Kenyan youth. It will have a positive impact on both players and coaches.”

Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, shared his excitement as well, noting, “This partnership goes beyond basketball. We are focused on empowering young people and helping them build a foundation for success, both in sports and life.”

This collaboration also marks an important moment for Safaricom, as they celebrate the 18th anniversary of M-PESA this March. By merging basketball with financial education, the program gives youth a chance to grow their skills while learning valuable life lessons.
This initiative supports NBA Africa’s broader mission to grow basketball across Africa, contributing to both athletic and social development for young people across the continent.
