Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has revealed that she has decided to freeze her eggs as a way of preparing for the future, allowing her the flexibility to have children when she feels ready and prepared.
Egg freezing, medically known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a process commonly used by women over the age of 30 or those who plan to have children later in life. It involves stimulating the ovaries with hormones so that multiple eggs mature at the same time, retrieving them, and preserving them in specialized equipment at -196°C (liquid nitrogen) to prevent aging or damage. When the woman wishes to conceive, the preserved eggs are fertilized with sperm through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and the resulting embryo is implanted into the womb.
In an interview with media personality Zeze Mills, the 45-year-old singer said she wants the option of having another child in the future, even though she is not currently planning to. She explained:
“I should have done it earlier. For now, I may not be thinking of having another child, but if I ever want to, I know it’s possible. We don’t know the number of eggs we are born with; by the time you’re 36, you might have run out, and that could be when you’re ready to have a baby. Freezing your eggs prevents that problem.”
Although she had her first child at the age of 30 — a time she says was perfect for her both financially and emotionally — Tiwa admits she wishes she had considered egg freezing much earlier. She advises women, especially those in their 30s, to think about it even if motherhood is not yet in their plans:
“My advice to women approaching their 30s or older is to consider freezing their eggs, even if they’re not thinking about having children right away. It takes away the pressure for the future and gives you options.”
Tiwa Savage gave birth to her first son, Jamil Balogun, on July 22, 2015, at the age of 35. Jamil is from her previous marriage to music executive Teebillz and is now 10 years old.
