COVID-19 cases resurface in Rwanda, health officials urge caution

he Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) has confirmed the return of COVID-19 cases in the country, following an increase in infections across other parts of the world.

RBC Director General, Prof. Claude Mambo Muvunyi, said the latest tests—over 16,000—showed a 0.7% positivity rate. While the cases remain mild, authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

“We’re seeing a few cases linked to international travel. They are not severe, and Rwanda is well-prepared,” said Prof. Muvunyi.

A new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, is spreading globally and has been found in the UK and Ireland. Though not more dangerous, it spreads quickly.

Health Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana also reminded Rwandans to be extra cautious during the seasonal weather changes, which often bring respiratory illnesses like flu and COVID-19.

Key Advice to the Public:

  • Seek medical attention if you have flu symptoms
  • Wash hands frequently
  • Wear a mask if feeling sick
  • Avoid spreading the virus to others

RBC confirmed that all positive patients are being treated and that there is no reason for panic.
