The Bulgarian government has announced that it is ready to allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to fly over its airspace on his way to attend a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Budapest, Hungary.
The main purpose of this meeting is for the two leaders to discuss possible ways to bring the war in Ukraine to an end.
On October 20, 2025, Bulgaria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, stated that his country would not block Putin’s flight since he would be traveling for a peace-related mission.
He said, “If the purpose is to hold a meeting aimed at achieving peace, then it is only reasonable that everything necessary for that to happen should be done.”
On October 16, Trump and Putin held a phone conversation and agreed to meet in Budapest within two weeks.
The two last met in Alaska on August 15, where they also discussed efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
